On May 24, 2019, hosted by China Ocean University and the Shandong Higher Education Institute, the 2019 College Teaching and Learning Forum co-organized by Blackboard China was held in Qingdao. More than 230 representatives from school leaders, academic affairs offices, teaching quality and evaluation offices, professional certification offices and other relevant departments from nearly 80 universities across the country attended the meeting. The conference invited experts from China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and other quality management and evaluation experts to discuss issues related to "first-class undergraduate and first-class teaching".
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sun Yuping, Dean of Blackboard China Education Research Institute, Dr. Zhang Dan, Director of Academic Affairs of China Ocean University and Deputy Director of Li Wei, and Vice President of China Ocean University Li Yiran delivered a speech. President Li Yanran first expressed warm welcome and gratitude to all the guests and experts who came from afar, and introduced the achievements of the Ocean University of China in the undergraduate knowledge reconstruction program and the future development goals.
In the expert report session, Fredrik Klemming, Blackboard's European consultant and former director of the Center for Educational Technology at the University of Westminster, introduced how British universities can use a hybrid approach to improve learning efficiency and quality of teaching, and at Imperial College, Leeds University, For example, Northumbria University, Durham University and other British universities show how they promote teaching and their application practices through technology.
Prof. Fang Qizhi, Director of the Office of Academic Affairs of Ocean University of China, started from the practice and exploration of Ocean University of China, introduced how the school faces the new challenges of education and teaching, adheres to the educational concept of “student center, achievement orientation and continuous improvement”, and pays attention to general education. Combine “point” and “face”, implement interdisciplinary innovation and entrepreneurship, carry out curriculum/experiment/practice knowledge update and reconstruction, replace the traditional curriculum model with the level training of ability, and construct a new practical teaching system.
Professor Meng Xianghong, deputy dean of the College of Food Science and Engineering, Ocean University of China, started from the engineering education certification standards, and introduced the undergraduate majors of the School of Food Science and Engineering from three aspects: professional top-level design, key connotation construction and institutional support construction. How to use the Blackboard teaching management platform to conduct teaching process management, data integration and evaluation of learning results, so as to establish an internationally equivalent and excellent engineering talent training quality assurance system within the four-year complete teaching cycle.
Director Li Yadong of Quality Management Office of Tongji University started from the OBE theory, introduced the development history of OBE and the teaching reform and quality evaluation based on OBE concept, pointed out the problems in the classroom teaching of colleges and universities, stressed that Chinese universities should strengthen their own capacity building and adapt to OBE. The concept should meet the new requirements of education and teaching reform.
Professor Xu Zhongfeng, Director of the Academic Affairs Department of Xi'an Jiaotong University, introduced the thinking and practice of first-class undergraduate major construction. In terms of professional connotation construction, Professor Xu introduced how to optimize the professional structure, attach importance to basic disciplines, and realize the “comprehensive integration” training system. In the construction of the gold class, Professor Xu believes that the gold class solves the most fundamental problem of education - talent training, and the curriculum is the core element of talent training. Finally, he shared the development history and teaching results of the online course of Xi'an Jiaotong University.
Dean Sun Yuping of Blackboard China Education Research Institute made a keynote speech on the topic of "Building 'Golden Class', Guaranteeing 'Golden Special', and Implementing First Class Teaching". Dean Sun introduced how Blackboard, as the world's largest education technology company, uses the learning management system to help colleges and universities to carry out mixed teaching, build a hybrid "golden class", conduct OBE teaching, achieve "first-class professional" construction and professional certification. The teaching data provided by Blackboard can be used as a direct evidence source for monitoring and evaluation of teaching quality, helping domestic and foreign universities to achieve international certifications such as engineering and business.
Professor Wu Zhijun, the vice president of the Undergraduate Health College of Tongji University, gave a lecture entitled “Exploration and Practice of the First-class Undergraduate Talent Cultivation System of Tongji University” with Tongji University as an example. Professor Wu proposed that education should pay attention to cultivating students' cognitive sensitivity to new knowledge and new technologies and lifelong learning. Talent training should emphasize comprehensive, international and innovative, so as to promote the quality of talent training in colleges and universities.
Professor Kamran Behdinan, Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto and Associate Dean of the School of International General Engineering at the University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, gave a keynote speech on output-oriented engineering certification and engineering design. Professor Kamran Behdinan briefly explained the process of establishing the construction of the International General Engineering Institute by Beihang University, and adopted four elements to realize the development of engineering major. He believes that the professional certification process is very challenging. The whole goal is to support the continuous improvement of the quality of engineering education. Certification will bring various benefits to teachers and students. He stated that continuous improvement is a very important requirement of OBE. Finally, he mentioned that the teaching management system has a good support for the successful development of OBE.
Mr. Liu Zongyuan, Senior Director of Blackboard China, gave a presentation to the delegates on the Blackboard teaching cloud platform to help universities launch OBE teaching, and explained that Blackboard adopts a new SaaS model to create a new user experience for users. He believes that the foundation of first-class teaching is the quality assurance of course teaching. Blackboard teaching cloud platform has a simple and intuitive navigation menu, directly drag and drop upload files, can provide comprehensive data analysis, make teachers and students communicate more efficiently, and at the same time help teachers to develop goals and curriculum teaching activities, and related to assessment methods, and Carry out mixed teaching, homework anti-plagiarism, academic early warning, achievement analysis, etc., to help universities achieve OBE teaching reform.
Professor Hamish Coates, deputy director of the Global School and Student Development Evaluation Center of Tsinghua University, delivered a keynote speech entitled "International Innovation in Online Higher Education." Professor Hamish Coates introduced the development trend of online higher education. He believes that mixed teaching is the general trend of higher education in the future. At the same time, he also expressed his own opinions on evaluation. The way society evaluates students in today's society is very different from before. However, it is still difficult to make an online assessment. Therefore, he hopes to use technology to make changes and share the results of the assessment nationwide.
Professor Jiang Xiaodong from the School of Life Sciences of East China Normal University shared the practical experience of the teaching management platform to help build online and offline hybrid gold courses. Professor Jiang Xiaodong believes that under the background of "Internet +", how to stimulate students' eagerness to learn and develop the teaching activities that students like to see and hear is the main teaching problem faced by college teachers, and also a powerful grasp of the "golden class" in the new era. Therefore, Professor Jiang Xiaodong made some attempts to rely on the Blackboard platform to adopt a series of teaching methods in the courses such as Aquatic Biology and Zoology, and organize a series of lines such as seminar reports, quick test names, and virtual honors. New teaching activities combined with the upper and lower lines to help and ensure the quality of teaching.
Professor Chen Xiaohui from the School of Science, Northeastern University gave a keynote speech on the mixed teaching practice of the university physics (bilingual) course. Professor Chen first introduced the University Physics Teaching and Research Center for the teaching design in the bilingual class, and shared various tests based on the Blackboard platform. She believes that the advantage of hybrid teaching is that it can take care of the individual differences of students. Students can flexibly arrange time and learning pace according to their actual situation, and teachers can solve problems in a targeted manner, improve learning efficiency, and cultivate students' teamwork ability. The ability to think, summarize information, and extract information can also make communication between teachers and students more convenient.
In addition to the wonderful theme report, this conference also set up a dialogue session. The theme of the dialogue was: professional certification to enhance the connotation of undergraduate talent training and guarantee of teaching quality. Experts exchanged ideas and views on the difficulties encountered in the implementation of OBE teaching and solutions, how to improve the direct evaluation of students' learning outcomes, and the OBE teaching management system to help OBE teaching in colleges and universities.
