On May 24, 2019, the 2019 College Teaching and Learning Forum sponsored by Ocean University of China and Shandong Higher Education Association and co-organized by Blackboard China was held in Qingdao. More than 230 representatives from school leaders, teaching affairs offices, teaching quality and evaluation offices, professional certification offices and other relevant departments from nearly 80 universities nationwide attended the meeting. This conference invited experts from China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and other higher education quality management and evaluation to discuss issues related to "first-class undergraduate and first-class teaching".
The meeting was chaired by Dean Sunping and Dr. Dan Dan from the Blackboard Chinese Institute of Education, Director of the Department of Educational Administration of China Ocean University of China, and Deputy Director of Li Yan, and Vice President Li Weiran of Ocean University of China addressed the conference. During the expert report, Fredrik Klemming, a Blackboard consultant in Europe and the former director of the University of Westminster's Education Technology Center, introduced how British universities use mixed teaching models to improve learning efficiency and teaching quality. British universities such as Northumbria University and Durham University, for example, introduced how they use technology to promote teaching and their application practices.
Starting from the practice and exploration of Ocean University of China, Professor Fang Qizhi, Director of the Administration Department of Ocean University of China, introduced how the school faces the new challenges of education and teaching, adheres to the education concept of "student center, results-oriented and continuous improvement", and focuses on the education of general education. The combination of "points" and "faces" implements interdisciplinary innovation and entrepreneurship, updates / reconstructs curriculum / experimental / practical knowledge, replaces traditional curriculum models with the cultivation of abilities, and builds a new practical teaching system.
Professor Meng Xianghong, Deputy Dean of the School of Food Science and Engineering, Ocean University of China, introduced the undergraduate professional construction of the School of Food Science and Engineering from the three aspects of professional top-level design, key connotation construction and institutional guarantee construction starting from the engineering education certification standards, and shared the How does the college use the Blackboard teaching management platform for teaching process management, data integration, and evaluation of learning outcomes, so as to establish an internationally equivalent engineering quality assurance system for the training of outstanding engineering talents within a complete four-year teaching cycle.
Director Li Yadong of the Quality Management Office of Tongji University, starting from OBE theory, introduced the development process of OBE and the teaching reform and quality evaluation based on the OBE concept, pointed out the problems existing in classroom teaching in universities, and emphasized that Chinese universities should strengthen their own capacity building and adapt to OBE Concept, to meet the new requirements of education and teaching reform.
Professor Xu Zhongfeng, Director of the Academic Affairs Department of Xi'an Jiaotong University, introduced the thinking and practice of first-class undergraduate professional construction. In terms of professional connotation construction, Professor Xu introduced how to optimize the professional structure, attach importance to basic disciplines, and achieve a "common-professional integration" training system. With regard to the construction of golden courses, Professor Xu believes that golden courses solve the most fundamental problem of education-talent training, and curriculum is the core element of talent training. Finally, he shared the development course and teaching achievements of Xi'an Jiaotong University's online courses.
Dean Sunping of the Blackboard Chinese Education Research Institute delivered a keynote speech on the topic of "building a" golden course ", guaranteeing a" golden college ", and implementing first-class teaching." Dean Sun introduced how Blackboard, as the world's largest educational technology company, uses learning management systems to help universities develop mixed teaching, construct mixed "golden courses", carry out OBE teaching, achieve "first-class professional" construction, and professional certification. The teaching data provided by Blackboard can be used as a direct source of evidence for monitoring and evaluation of teaching quality, helping universities at home and abroad achieve international certifications such as engineering and business.
Professor Wu Zhijun, deputy dean of Tongji University's Undergraduate School, took Tongji University as an example and shared a speech entitled "Exploration and Practice of First-Class Undergraduate Talent Training System of Tongji University". Professor Wu proposed that in education, attention should be paid to cultivating students' cognitive sensitivity to new knowledge, new technologies, and lifelong learning. Talent training needs to emphasize comprehensiveness, internationalization, and innovation to promote the continuous improvement of the quality of talent training.
Professor Kamran Behdinan, professor of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto, and deputy dean of the School of International General Engineering, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, delivered a keynote speech on output-oriented engineering certification and engineering design. Professor Kamran Behdinan briefed everyone on the process of Beihang's establishment of the International General Engineering College, and adopted four elements to achieve the development of engineering specialty. He believes that the professional certification process is very challenging. The whole goal is to support the continuous improvement of engineering education quality. Passing certification will bring various benefits to teachers and students. He said that continuous improvement is a very important requirement of OBE. Finally, he mentioned that the teaching management system has a very good support role for the successful implementation of OBE.
Mr. Liu Zongyuan, the senior director of Blackboard China, introduced the Blackboard teaching cloud platform to help colleges and universities introduce OBE teaching to the participants, and explained that Blackboard uses a new SaaS model to create a new user experience for users. He believes that the foundation of first-class teaching is the quality assurance of course teaching. The Blackboard teaching cloud platform has a simple and intuitive navigation menu, which can directly upload files by dragging and dropping. It can provide comprehensive data analysis, make teacher-student communication more efficient, and help teachers cultivate goals related to curriculum teaching activities, and assessment methods. Prof. Hamish Coates, Deputy Director of Tsinghua University Global School and Student Development Evaluation Center, delivered a keynote speech entitled "International Innovation in Online Higher Education". Professor Hamish Coates introduced the development trend of online higher education. He believes that blended teaching is the general trend of higher education in the future. At the same time, he also expresses his own views on assessment. The way society evaluates students today is very different from before. However, it is still difficult to make online assessments. Therefore, he hopes to use technology to make changes and to share and apply the results of the assessment nationwide.
Professor Jiang Xiaodong from the School of Life Sciences of East China Normal University shared the practical experience of teaching management platform to help the construction of online and offline mixed gold courses. Professor Jiang Xiaodong believes that in the context of "Internet +", how to inspire students to learn hard and develop teaching activities that students love and see is a major teaching problem faced by college teachers and a powerful grasp for the construction of "golden courses" in the new era. Therefore, Professor Jiang Xiaodong has made some attempts to rely on the Blackboard platform to adopt breakthrough teaching methods in courses such as "Aquatic Biology" and "Zooology" and organize a series of lines such as seminar reports, quick test roll calls, virtual honors, etc. New teaching activities combining online and offline to help and ensure the improvement of teaching quality.
Professor Chen Xiaohui from Northeastern University's School of Science gave a keynote speech on the mixed teaching practice of university physics (bilingual) courses. Professor Chen first introduced the teaching design for bilingual classes in the University Physics Teaching and Research Center, and also shared various tests based on the Blackboard platform. She believes that the advantage of mixed teaching is that it can take care of the individual differences of students, students can flexibly arrange time and learning pace according to their actual conditions, and teachers can solve problems in a targeted manner, improve learning efficiency, and cultivate students' teamwork ability, The ability to think, summarize, and extract information can also make the communication between teachers and students more convenient.
